  • What is now the field of kinesiology (a combination of many sub-disciplines and professions) began in the early 20th century as physical education. Over the last 60 years there has been considerable change in our field with many advances in sub-disciplinary and professional scholarship. A historical review provides an overview of changes in kinesiology and physical education during the 60-year period from 1960 to the present. This review is preceded by a brief overview of the early years of the field (1900 to 1960). Examples of change in the products (scholarly outcomes) of kinesiology and changes in processes (procedures to produce scholarly outcomes) are described. An emphasis is placed on the importance of many forms of scholarship. Messages are presented for helping scholars cope with future changes in the field of kinesiology. The idea that the field of kinesiology could become the Renaissance Field of the 21st century is proposed.

These guidelines aim to enhance teaching effectiveness and promote the development of well-rounded, reflective, and passionate coaches. Recommendations include: (1) Setting Standards and Boundaries, (2) Carefully Considering and Designing Assessments to Promote Reflection, (3) Ensuring the Material is Relatable to Students’ Experiences, (4) Being Mindful of the Level of Challenge, and (5) Making the Coaching Enjoyable. These recommendations are intended to support coach educators in the delivery and design of programs with the goal of producing high-quality, competent future coaches.

Baghurst, T. (2025). Efficiency, leadership, and leveraging AI in kinesiology and sports science: Application from the 8th IOHSK annual conference. Journal of Health, Sports, and Kinesiology, 6, 5-8. https://doi.org/10.47544/johsk20251117005

  • The 8th IOHSK Conference was held at the University of California, Berkley in May 2025. Three speakers were invited to present in person on very different topics of their choosing. However, the amalgamation of all three provided valuable recommendations for the career preparation and implementation of those working in physical education, coaching, sports science, and kinesiology. Taking work from stress and burnout, leadership and professional development, and artificial intelligence (AI), this article presents some generic but effective methods for long-term success in our profession. Highlighted are the importance of self-care through (1) time management, (2) saying “no,” and (3) working with a mentor. This article provides practical application for those students with aspirations to work in these sport-based disciplines, as well as the seasoned expert seeking a reboot of their personal and professional efficiency and effectiveness.

  • In the evolving landscape of academia, faculty success has traditionally been measured by peer-reviewed publications, grant funding, and teaching excellence. However, the increasing societal emphasis on public impact and knowledge dissemination has elevated the significance of media publications, including news articles, interviews, and social media engagement, as indicators of faculty performance. This article examines recent studies that highlight the benefits of media visibility for faculty members, discusses institutional responses to incorporating media engagement into retention, promotion, and tenure (RPT) processes, and explores the opportunities and considerations associated with integrating media publications into academic evaluation.
