Open access publishing enables unrestricted access to scholarly research by removing financial and institutional barriers. It allows readers worldwide to freely read, download, and build upon published work, thereby fostering greater knowledge dissemination and scholarly collaboration.
Open access (OA) refers to the practice of making academic research articles permanently and freely available online, ensuring that anyone, anywhere, can engage with the research.By publishing open access, authors significantly enhance the visibility, readership, and potential citation impact of their work. Increased accessibility not only benefits the academic community but also supports researchers’ career advancement and funding opportunities. As expectations continue to grow for demonstrating the societal relevance and impact of research, open access provides an effective pathway for reaching audiences beyond those with access to well-resourced research libraries.
Open access research empowers policymakers, non-governmental organizations, educators, practitioners, media professionals, and industry leaders to apply scholarly findings directly to practice and decision-making. Without paywalls or usage restrictions, research can be shared globally and equitably, ensuring that valuable knowledge is available to individuals and institutions regardless of their financial or geographic limitations.
Authors publishing open access are typically offered a choice of Creative Commons licenses, which define how their work may be reused. More permissive licenses enable broader reuse and adaptation of research while ensuring appropriate attribution. This flexibility promotes interdisciplinary engagement and encourages other scholars to incorporate, reference, and expand upon existing work.
Ultimately, open access publishing maximizes the reach, relevance, and impact of research by enabling others to draw upon it responsibly, contribute new insights, and advance scholarly dialogue across disciplines—while fully acknowledging the original authors’ contributions.

An Article Processing Fee (APF), also known as an Article Processing Charge (APC), is a fee charged by academic publishers to authors, their institutions, or funding agencies to make a research article immediately and freely available online under an open-access model. Rather than relying on subscription revenue, APFs/APCs support the costs associated with scholarly publishing, including peer review management, editorial processing, copyediting, typesetting, digital hosting, and long-term archiving. These fees vary widely across publishers and journals, ranging from several hundred to more than $10,000 per article. While APFs/APCs may represent a substantial financial burden for some authors, many publishers offer waivers, discounts, or institutional open-access agreements to help offset these costs.
JOHSK Publication Fee Policy: The Journal of Health, Sports, and Kinesiology (JOHSK) does not charge any publication fees. However, all authors listed on the manuscript must be registered and paid members of IOHSK at the time of submission. No exceptions will be made.
Estimating Global Article Processing Charges…
“A recent study has provided comprehensive estimates of global spending on article processing charges (APCs) for open access (OA) publishing, focusing on six major publishers from 2019 to 2023. APCs are fees charged for publishing articles in fully open access journals (gold) and in subscription journals that make individual articles open access (hybrid). The study highlights the lack of transparency in APC prices and payments, which has made it difficult to track institutional, national, or global expenditures on OA publishing…..”
