Introduction
The Medical Case Study Club at Los Osos High School would like to express its sincere appreciation to the International Organization for Health, Sports, and Kinesiology (IOHSK) for awarding our club the 2025 Student Club Grant. This grant provided valuable seed funding that enabled us to purchase educational medical equipment and organize interactive workshops for students interested in medicine, healthcare, and related careers.
During the six-month grant period, the Medical Case Study Club focused on increasing student engagement and interest in healthcare through hands-on learning experiences, medical case studies, educational workshops, and fundraising activities. These programs provided students with opportunities to develop practical skills, explore healthcare professions, and strengthen their understanding of medical and emergency-response concepts.
Use of Grant Funds
The IOHSK Student Club Grant was primarily used to purchase educational materials and medical training equipment for club workshops. Materials purchased included suturing needles, practice skin pads, needle drivers, and forceps for the club’s suturing workshop.
These materials allowed students to gain hands-on experience with basic clinical skills in a safe, supervised, and educational environment. The availability of appropriate training equipment significantly enhanced the quality of the workshop and provided students with an opportunity to practice techniques that would otherwise be difficult to experience in a traditional high school classroom setting.
Club Activities and Events
Fall Bake Sale
On October 9, the Medical Case Study Club participated in the Los Osos High School Fall Bake Sale from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event provided students with an opportunity to purchase food and refreshments from various student organizations while learning more about clubs and extracurricular activities available on campus.
All 10 club board members participated in preparing for, organizing, and operating the club’s booth throughout the event. The Medical Case Study Club completed approximately 100 sales and raised approximately $400.
The proceeds from the fundraiser helped support future club activities and educational workshops. In addition to generating financial support, participation in the Fall Bake Sale increased the club’s visibility within the Los Osos High School community and provided an opportunity to introduce more students to the club’s mission and activities.
Suturing Workshop
The Medical Case Study Club hosted an interactive suturing workshop from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop was designed to introduce students to basic suturing techniques and demonstrate how different techniques may be applied in various clinical situations.
Students were introduced to several suturing methods, including the horizontal mattress suture and the simple interrupted suture. Participants were presented with medical case studies involving different wound scenarios and were asked to determine the most appropriate suturing technique for each situation. This activity encouraged students to apply critical-thinking and problem-solving skills while considering realistic medical scenarios.
Following the case study activity, a medical professional demonstrated proper suturing techniques. Students were then provided with suturing needles, practice skin pads, needle drivers, and forceps purchased with IOHSK grant funds and were given the opportunity to practice the techniques under professional supervision.
Approximately 25 students, excluding club board members, participated in the workshop. Under the guidance of the medical professional, participants gained valuable hands-on experience while developing a stronger understanding of basic clinical procedures commonly used in healthcare settings. The workshop was one of the club’s primary educational activities supported by the IOHSK Student Club Grant.
Valentine’s Bake Sale
On February 13, the Medical Case Study Club participated in the Valentine’s Bake Sale from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event was organized to bring members of the Los Osos High School community together in celebration of Valentine’s Day while also promoting student involvement in campus organizations.
All 10 club officers assisted with preparing baked goods, organizing the fundraiser, and operating the club’s booth. The club sold a variety of items, including strawberry, blueberry, and banana muffins, as well as lemon bars.
The fundraiser resulted in approximately 50 sales and generated approximately $200 in revenue. These funds helped support future club activities, educational programming, and student workshops.
In addition to raising funds, the Valentine’s Bake Sale provided another opportunity to increase awareness of the Medical Case Study Club and its mission to educate students about healthcare careers, medical topics, and practical health-related skills.
CPR Workshop
On April 23, the Medical Case Study Club hosted a CPR workshop from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop was designed to introduce students to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and provide practical information about responding appropriately during medical emergencies.
During the workshop, a guest speaker demonstrated proper CPR techniques and provided students with information regarding CPR training and certification. Participants learned when CPR should be performed, how CPR is properly administered, and what important safety and emergency-response steps should be taken before beginning CPR.
Approximately 30 students, excluding club board members, attended the workshop. Through the guidance and instruction of the guest speaker, participants learned potentially life-saving skills and developed a stronger understanding of emergency-response procedures.
Students were also provided with an opportunity to practice CPR techniques using a training mannequin during a simulated drowning emergency scenario. This hands-on activity allowed participants to apply what they had learned in a realistic setting and helped build their confidence in responding appropriately to potential real-life emergencies.
Overall, the CPR workshop successfully combined classroom-based instruction, professional guidance, and hands-on practice to provide students with a meaningful and engaging healthcare education experience.
Grant Impact
The 2025 IOHSK Student Club Grant had a meaningful impact on the Medical Case Study Club at Los Osos High School by providing financial support for educational activities that would otherwise have been difficult to offer. The grant enabled the club to purchase medical training materials, particularly suturing equipment, and to create hands-on learning opportunities for students interested in healthcare and medical careers.
Through the support of IOHSK, students were able to move beyond traditional classroom learning and participate in practical activities that introduced them to basic clinical and emergency-response skills. The suturing and CPR workshops gave participants opportunities to apply medical knowledge, engage in realistic case-based scenarios, and learn directly from healthcare professionals.
The grant also strengthened the club’s ability to attract and engage students. By offering interactive and professionally guided activities, the Medical Case Study Club increased awareness of its mission and provided students with meaningful exposure to healthcare-related fields. The grant therefore contributed not only to the club’s programming but also to its long-term development and visibility within the Los Osos High School community.
Outcomes and Accomplishments
During the six-month grant period, the Medical Case Study Club successfully organized educational workshops and fundraising activities that supported its mission of promoting student interest in medicine and healthcare.
Major outcomes and accomplishments included:
Approximately 25 students participated in the suturing workshop and gained hands-on experience practicing basic suturing techniques using equipment purchased with IOHSK grant funds.
Approximately 30 students participated in the CPR workshop and learned essential CPR and emergency-response procedures through instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice.
Students were introduced to medical case studies that encouraged critical thinking, problem-solving, and the application of clinical concepts to realistic situations.
The club organized two fundraising events, including the Fall Bake Sale and Valentine’s Bake Sale, generating approximately $600 in combined revenue to support future educational activities and workshops.
All 10 club officers and board members actively participated in organizing and implementing club programs, strengthening their leadership, teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
The club increased its visibility within the Los Osos High School community and expanded opportunities for students to explore healthcare professions in an engaging and accessible environment.
Overall, the activities supported through the grant reached more than 50 student participants through major educational workshops, in addition to the broader number of students reached through fundraising and campus outreach events. These accomplishments demonstrate the value of providing high school students with early opportunities to explore medicine, healthcare, and health-related professions through experiential learning.
